Prostrate and Erectile Dysfunction

According to Maharishi Ayurveda problems with the prostate and erectile dysfunction are due to disturbed Apana Vata (the downward flowing energy). Apana Vata controls the flow of energy, blood and nutrients to the prostate gland and other pelvic organs. Our sedentary western lifestyle is a major cause of imbalanced Apana. Forcing or restraining natural urges (including the urge to pass stools, flatus, urine, semen etc) will also Find-a-Practitioner aggravate the natural downward flow of Vata.

Apana Vata is also influenced by Prana Vata (which governs mental functions) and vice versa. Hence if you are worried, tense or irritable, the apana function is weakened. When the apana is disturbed it leads to dysfunction of the pelvic organs and in time disturbs Kapha (tissue formation) leading to enlargement of the prostate.

It is important to take care with your diet and digestion to ensure a healthy prostate. For example the prostate gland particularly needs zinc for its proper functioning. In Maharishi Ayurveda in addition to a balance diet it is important that our Agni is strong to ensure that food is properly digested and metabolised. Otherwise ama (incompletely digested and metabolized food residue) will accumulate in the prostate leading to inflammation and infection (prostatitis)

Infertility

It is known that disturbance in the amount and/or quality of sperm contributes to around 40% to 50% of cases of infertility today. There are many factors that influence male fertility including smoking, obesity, drugs, environmental influences as well as testicular abnormalities.

From the Maharishi Ayurvedic perspective, fertility is primarily governed by the state of Sukra (one of the 7 dhatus or tissues). If the Sukra is well nourished, it results in sperm that are healthier and more resilient to damage. From Sukra is produced Ojas – the substance responsible for vitality, wellness and immunity. So balanced formation of Sukra is fundamental to the promotion of health and prevention of disease.
